Couple have given 38-years service at the George Street army surplus store

After 38 years service to the people of Banbury, Troopers in George Street is set to close towards the end of September.   Owners Mike and Hazel Dean are retiring and are unable to sell the business to new owners as the shop’s lease has expired.

Troopers opened in 1983 – the year when Derby winning horse Shergar was kidnapped, compact discs went on sale for the first time in High Street shops and Margaret Thatcher won a second term in office as Prime Minister.

Prior to running the shop Mike had been working in the magazine print industry, but a period in hospital after an illness led to a career change.   With a strong family military history and a personal interest the idea of an army surplus store was born.

Over the years Troopers has kept many young people kitted out for their adventures including Cadets, Scouts and Guides.   The shop has also been the main port of call for trousers and boots for heavy weather work, gardening, farm use and industrial work.   It’s also seen periods as a fashion go-to place.

Recently 71-year-old Mike has been running the shop on his own after Hazel’s health made it impossible for her to help.

Mike will miss running Troopers.   He said: “Its hard to see it go, but like all things it has to come to an end at some point.”

Mike’s age has played a part in the decision to close the shop.  He had hoped to sell the business to new owners who had wanted to take over, but he has been unable to get the lease renewed with the building’s landlord.

Over the years Mike’s customers have included a number of celebrities and pop stars.   One of the things he has enjoyed is dealing with all types of different people.   Mike said: “Its knowing how to deal with different people.   I’ve met many people over the years and its been a real pleasure.

“Its been a pleasure to work with people in the town.”

In recent years Mike has seen a change in people’s shopping habits.   He said: “When I first came here the shop would be packed on a Saturday.  Now people are buying online and the way they buy things has completely changed in the last ten years.”

Troopers will close towards the end of September.   After that Mike and Hazel have got plenty to keep them busy.   Mike said: “We’ve got a very large garden.   There’s always plenty of work that needs doing in that and I’ve got plenty of other jobs I need to do.  So I can keep myself occupied.”
