Another milestone is achieved in the regeneration of the canal side area

The footbridge over the River Cherwell linking Spiceball Leisure Centre to Spiceball Road has reopened.   It has been closed during the redevelopment of the Castle Quay Waterfront area.

The footbridge reopening is the latest milestone to be achieved in the regeneration of the canal side area and will improve public access to the leisure centre.

The new Waterfront development will include a brand-new 30,000 sq. ft Lidl store and 117 room Premier Inn opening later this Summer.    Entertainment in the area will include the Light – a state-of-the-art 8 screen cinema, a leisure offering with 10 lanes of bowling and a sun terrace overlooking the canal.  The Waterfront will also be home to several restaurants, which are set to open at the beginning of next year.

Councillor Phil Chapman, Cherwell District Council’s Lead Member for Leisure and Sport said, “The footbridge reopening will greatly improve people’s day to day commutes and visits – it has never been so easy to go to the Spiceball Leisure Centre and then pop into the shops or get a bite to eat at Castle Quay.

“I want to take this opportunity to thank the people of Banbury for their understanding while the footbridge was out of use. The new Castle Quay Waterfront destination will bring an exceptional new offering to the town centre, complementing the existing shopping centre perfectly and providing the best-in-class lifestyle offer for residents and tourists.”

Jason Andrews, Area Manager for Parkwood Leisure the operators of Spiceball Leisure Centre said, “We are delighted to have the bridge open again and welcome the positive impact that it will have on visitor numbers at the centre.”
