Riders enjoy cycling challenge and happy atmosphere at Broughton Castle Sportive

“Stunning scenery, picturesque villages – I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it”

There were plenty of smiling faces at the Broughton Castle Sportive bike ride on Sunday as several hundred cyclists faced the challenge of one of five different length routes.

Despite a damp start a number of serious riders left Broughton Castle at around 6.30am to peddle around the 100 mile route.   This saw them ride across to Winchcombe near Cheltenham, taking in locations such as Broadway, Moreton-in-Marsh and Shipston, encountering a number of steep hills on the way.

Others faced the challenge of 75, 50 and 25 miles, or a shorter family fun ride.

The event was organised by the Rotary Club of Banbury Cherwell, who have been planning the day for the last few months.   They arrived on site at Broughton Castle on Wednesday when preparations included mowing the grass!

Emergency cover was provided by Northampton Emergency Aid Team with mobile ambulance units at the Castle and Moreton-in-Marsh.   Raynet radio operators kept the event control team armed with the latest information from around the five different routes.

Back at the Castle riders enjoyed a free post-ride meal courtesy of Adderbury based Tugo, who’s completely plant-based menu proved very popular.

The Broughton Castle Sportive cost between £5,000 and £6,000 to organise, but the Rotary Club of Banbury Cherwell does not take any money themselves, meaning the expected profits of around £10,000 can be shared with local charities.
