The Labour Leader at Cherwell District Council has laid the blame for the situation firmly with the government

There were 69,094 people waiting for care within the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust at the end of September.   The figures, released on Tuesday, show an increase from the previous month’s total of 67,974.

34.3% of those on the list had been waiting for more than 18 weeks.

Across England waiting list numbers have reached a record breaking 7,071,829 people.

The Labour Leader at Cherwell District Council has laid the blame for the situation firmly with the government.   Councillor Sean Woodcock said: “After 12 years of Conservative rule the NHS is on its knees – and people in Cherwell are paying the price. The winter has not even begun yet our health service is already deep in crisis.

“Labour has a fully funded plan to get our health service going again – by training the doctors and nurses we need to provide the care people in Cherwell deserve, but Rishi Sunak is too weak to take the action necessary to deliver real change.

“The truth is this government has run out of ideas, and they are running our health service into the ground. The longer the Conservatives are in power, the longer people in Cherwell will wait for care.”

A spokesperson for Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust told Banbury FM: “During what has been a challenging time for the NHS, staff have worked hard and cared for patients needing urgent care while continuing to see as many non-urgent patients as possible.

“We thank our staff who have worked incredibly hard to care for our patients, including those who have waited the longest, as quickly as possible. We know that waiting for treatment can be a worrying time for our patients and we are doing all that we can to tackle this.  We are working closely with all of our partners to maximise all available capacity for our patients.

“Patients waiting for treatment are prioritised based on clinical need, and we continue to urge anyone who needs help to come forward to get the care they need.”

Banbury FM has offered Banbury’s MP Victoria Prentis the opportunity to comment on the figures.
